  • What is Cornhole?
Cornhole is a game composed of frames wherein each team rotates tossing their team's 4 bags until all bags (8) have been tossed toward the opposite board. At the conclusion of each frame, the score is calculated and added to the team's net total. A winner is determined when a team reaches or surpasses 21 at the conclusion of a frame. The number of frames played varies per match.
  • How do you keep score in Cornhole?
The goal in cornhole is to be the first team to reach or surpass 21 points. Points are scored by landing a thrown bag on the board (1 point) and by having a thrown bag drop into the hole (3 points). Players calculate the points scored per team once all eight bags have been tossed. Cornhole uses cancellation scoring. For example, if “Team A" scores 8 points in frame 1, and "Team B" scores 2 points in frame 1, ”Team B"'s 2 points are subtracted from "Team A"'s 8 points - which results in awarding 6 points to "Team A"'s net total. This motion is continued frame by frame until a team reaches or surpasses 21 points. ChocCity Cornhole uses the Scoreholio app to keep track of and calculate scoring. However, there are times when we don’t use the Scoreholio app, so understanding how scorning works in cornhole is an excellent mental skill to have handy!
  • Who’s invited to the cookout?
First and foremost - HAVE FUN! We’ve created this to be a welcoming space to learn and play the game of cornhole. ChocCity Cornhole offers a safe, comfortable, and friendly space for WOC, queer POC, and allies to play cornhole. While we do not exclude anyone from playing with us, the space has been intentionally created for these communities.
  • Does ChocCity have a code of conduct?
Cornhole offers a safe, comfortable, and friendly space for WOC, queer POC, and allies to play cornhole. We do not promote nor condone behavior that directly contradicts with this mission. We ask all players and their spectators to respect one another. If you witness behavior that is a deterrent to the fun, social environment we strive for, please immediately bring it to an organizer’s attention. We are thankful to be able to bring competitive cornhole to DC and appreciate your help in keeping our league a comfortable space for all participants.
  • I’ve never played before, can I still sign up to play?
Yes! ChocCity Cornhole creates a learning environment for all skill levels, while offering more competitive options for seasoned throwers.
  • Do I need a partner or team to play?
Nope! When you register to play with ChocCity Cornhole during our regular season games, you’ll register via Scoreholio as a solo player. For tournaments that require a partner, you’ll be informed ahead of time.
  • Do I need to bring my own bags?
ChocCity Cornhole provides all equipment needed to play at our weekly league. But don’t let that stop you from purchasing your own bags! There are many bag manufacturers that create a variety of designs and speeds. We are happy to help you select your next bag!
  • Is there a cost associated with playing?
ChocCity Cornhole runs a bi-weekly pay-to-play tournament, with a payout to the top three finishers. No-cost tournaments and pay-to-play tournaments will run on separate weeks and are advertised differently.

  • If I show up to a ChocCity event, do I have to play?
Nope! Many people show up each week just to hang out and watch the games. Roughly 30 minutes - 1 hour before our tournaments begin, we have our boards set up so you can practice and throw before “official” play begins.
  • What's the difference between Social and Competitive Play?
Social Play - Social play takes place every Thursday as part of our weekly meetups for the first hour of the night ( typically 7pm - 8pm ET). It is open to all levels and is the perfect atmosphere to familiarize yourself with the game of cornhole, learn/practice your skills, and connect with other players. There are no official tournaments or obligations to stay on the boards during this time. Just come out, throw, and have fun! Competitive Play - Competitive play will take place following Social Play (8:30pm ET). This time is reserved for those who want an increased level of competition. Tournament-style play will be common during competitive play, and registration is required via Scoreholio. If you are looking to hone your skills, play multiple games and give your attention to boards, this style of play is for you. It's not uncommon to play 4+ games a night, spanning a few hours. We encourage everyone to matriculate to competitive play as they grow their cornhnole skill set. Hosting two levels of play enables us to better accommodate our social and competitive communities - creating a space for players of all kinds. We love it when folks come to throw and vibe, and we love to play cornhole all night!
